Which tires do I put snow chains/cables on?
Sep 15, 2023
The placement of snow chains or cables depends on your drivetrain (FWD, RWD, AWD/4WD), your vehicle manufacturer’s guidance, and local regulations. Use the guidelines below and the linked resources for exact fitment and safety.
- Front-Wheel Drive (FWD): Install chains on the two front tires (the drive/steering axle). See the full placement guide: chains on front vs. rear tires (FWD).
- Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): Install chains on the two rear tires (the drive axle). Details here: which tires to chain for RWD.
- All-Wheel Drive (AWD) / 4-Wheel Drive (4WD): For balanced traction and control, many setups benefit from chains on all four tires—check your owner’s manual. Learn more: AWD/4WD chain placement and 2 or 4 chains for AWD?
- Local regulations: Requirements vary. Review the tire chain laws by state and California’s chain-control summary if you travel in the Sierra.
- Tire size & compatibility: Chains must match your exact tire size and vehicle clearance. Start with the Tire Chain Size Guide and your owner’s manual.
- Practice & installation: Do a dry run before a storm and follow the step-by-step Tire Chains Install Instructions.
Remove chains when roads are clear to avoid unnecessary wear and vibration. For speeds, removal, and safety tips, see the Guide to Tire Chains.
