Do Tire Chains Damage Tires?
Used properly, tire chains generally do not damage tires. The keys are correct sizing, careful installation, slow speeds on snow/ice, and removing chains when roads clear.
- Correct installation: Mount and secure chains exactly as directed, then re-tighten after rolling 50–100 ft. Follow the step-by-step Tire Chains Install Instructions and confirm your exact fit with the Tire Chain Size Guide.
- Speed & surface conditions: Keep speeds down (typically 25–30 mph) and avoid dry pavement to limit wear on chains and tires. See recommended speed with tire chains and when you should not use chains.
- Extended use on clear roads: Prolonged running on bare pavement accelerates wear and can cause damage. Rinse, dry, and store properly after use—tips here: how to get the most life out of tire chains.
- Tire/wheel-well clearance: Ensure adequate clearance around brakes, struts, and fenders. If your manual limits chain use, review SAE Type S (low-clearance) chains or these options when your car says it can’t use chains: clearance-friendly chain alternatives.
Inspect chains and tires regularly and replace damaged components promptly. For a quick refresher on safe use and removal, see the Guide to Tire Chains.
