How to Put Chains on Tires
- Lay the chains out flat. Ensure there are no twists and that all hooks and fasteners face outward.
- Drape the tire chains over the tire. Grab the chains in the center and drape them over the tire, making sure even centered.
- Connect the inside fastener first. Reach behind the tire and connect the inner link or hook.
- Connect the outside fastener. Pull the chain tight and secure the outer link. The chain should now cover the tire evenly.
- Use tensioners. If applicable, install chain tensioners to eliminate slack and keep chains tight while driving.
- Drive forward 10–15 feet. Re check the chains and tighten them again if necessary. (Please do not panic if your chains come up too long, this is normal and can be expected: You can easily shorten.)
