How to Put Chains on Tires
May 21, 2025
Step-by-Step Tire Chain Installation Guide
- Lay the chains out flat. Make sure there are no twists and that hooks/fasteners face outward. ( watch ladder-chain setup (tractor/ATV) )
- Drape the chains over the tire. Grab the midpoint and center the chains over the tread. ( watch truck tire chain install )
- Connect the inside fastener first. Reach behind the tire and secure the inner hook/link. ( watch cable chain connection (truck/SUV) )
- Connect the outside fastener. Pull the chain tight across the tread and secure the outer link. ( watch diagonal cable chain install )
- Use tensioners. Add adjusters to remove slack and keep chains centered. [ tire chain tensioners & adjusters | watch spring tensioner demo (large tractors) ]
- Drive forward 10–15 feet, then re-check. Re-tighten if needed. Extra tail is normal — shorten for a custom fit. ( watch how to shorten chains )
