How to Install Snow Chains (Step-by-Step)
Putting on snow chains can vary slightly by chain style and vehicle. Use this general guide, and always follow the instructions that come with your chains.
- Find a safe location: Park on a flat surface away from traffic. Engage the parking brake and turn off the engine.
- Check the instructions: Review the official Tire Chains Install Instructions for your chain style and vehicle type.
- Position the chains: Lay the chains flat on the ground and untangle them so cross chains are aligned and facing the correct direction.
- Wrap the chains: Drape the chain evenly over the top of the tire so the traction side faces outward and the chain is centered across the tread and sidewalls.
- Connect the chains: Fasten the inner and outer side chains per your chain design. If your set uses cams, a cam tightening tool makes securing the cams quick and consistent.
- Adjust the tension: Use appropriate tire chain tensioners & adjusters to snug the chains so they sit tight and centered on the tread.
- Repeat for other tires: Install chains on the remaining tires as recommended for your vehicle and conditions.
- Check the fit: Verify the chains are centered with even coverage. If overall length is excessive, consult the install instructions for safe shortening and fit tips.
- Test the chains: Drive forward 50–100 feet and re-tighten. Listen for unusual noises or vibration and re-center/tension as needed.
Pro tips: Confirm you have the correct size with the Tire Chain Size Guide, practice installation in dry conditions, and keep essential tire chain tools & accessories in your vehicle for fast adjustments.
