Snow Chains
Jun 03, 2023
Snow chains, also known as tire chains, are traction devices designed to improve grip on snow-covered or icy roads. They are made of interlinked metal sections that wrap around a vehicle’s tires, providing extra stability and reducing the risk of slipping in winter conditions.
The main purpose of snow chains is to increase tire-to-road friction, helping maintain traction and preventing slippage. Without chains, tires can struggle to grip icy or snowy surfaces, making acceleration, braking, and steering more difficult. By adding tire chains, drivers gain extra traction that enhances safety, stability, and control in challenging conditions.
Snow chains are especially useful in areas with heavy snowfall, icy roads, or mountainous terrain. They are used on passenger cars, trucks, SUVs, and commercial vehicles during the winter months. With properly fitted chains, drivers can travel slippery roads more confidently, lowering the risk of accidents and improving their ability to navigate steep grades or unplowed areas.
It’s important to remember that snow chains should not be used on dry pavement. Doing so can cause premature tire wear, damage road surfaces, and negatively affect vehicle handling. Install them only when necessary and remove them once conditions improve. For correct sizing, consult our Tire Chain Size Guide and consider using tensioners to keep them securely in place.
