Do automatic chains work?

What are automatic tire chains?
Automatic tire chains (deploy-from-cab systems) can be engaged and retracted without leaving the vehicle. They’re designed to add instant traction for cars, trucks, buses, and fleet vehicles operating in snow and ice.
How automatic chains work
These systems use a hub with rotating discs and short chain segments that swing under the tire when activated from the cabin. As the wheel turns, the chain segments bite into snow and ice to improve grip and control. Learn more in our explainer: Do automatic chains work?
Pros and cons
- Convenience: Engage from the cab—ideal for frequent transitions between clear and snowy sections.
- Consistency: Delivers predictable traction when conditions change suddenly.
- Trade-offs: Systems cost more than traditional chains and may not match the ultimate traction of heavy-duty ladder or V-bar chains in extreme conditions.

If you don’t need a permanently mounted deploy system, consider self-tensioning chains that automatically maintain tightness after manual install:

Installation & care tips
Automatic systems are permanently mounted and activated from the cab; for traditional/self-tensioning styles, follow our Tire Chains Install Instructions. Remove chains when roads are clear to minimize wear, and always follow your vehicle manufacturer’s guidance.
